Something Remarkable In Helsinki

Something remarkable has just happened in Helsinki – the Finnish capital has achieved zero road fatalities in the last 12 months.

The success is the fruit of several years of labour, and the country’s long-term ‘Vision Zero’ strategy, which focuses on system design to improve road safety, rather than just driver behaviour.

You can get more detail HERE, but some of the key implementations that have helped them achieve this include:

  • Expanding 30 km/h speed limits across more than half the city’s streets
  • Redesigning roads to favour pedestrians and cyclists
  • Widespread use of traffic cameras and enforcement
  • Rigorous post-crash investigations and random alcohol/drug checks

We’ll all have our own opinions on these sorts of policies, but it’s hard to argue with the results – incidents have steadily been reducing each year, and in the last 12 months to the end of July 2025, there were NO road fatalities, despite 1.5 million people living in and commuting into the area.

One of the main philosophies behind Helsinki’s success seems to be the idea of deliberately making drivers uncomfortable, with the idea being that the more complex the landscape, the more conscious and conscious the driver is likely to be.

So, the million-dollar question: could elements of Finland’s approach be applied here, and if some of these measures were implemented in the UK, what impact would that have on your fleet?
