Could New Clearer Pothole Rules Improve Road Safety?

You don’t need us to tell you that potholes are a serious problem on our roads.

The government have been attempted to address the issue through increased funding as it impacts road safety and causes punctures and breakdowns.

But the question is… could greater transparency finally help improve the situation?

Because the Government has announced new rules that will require councils in England to publicly report how well they are maintaining and repairing their roads.

From September, motorists and fleet managers will be able to see how their local authority is performing, including how many roads are due for resurfacing and what is being done to prevent the same potholes from repeatedly reappearing.

The move comes as part of a wider effort to improve road maintenance standards and ensure public money is being spent effectively.

Councils that fail to publish the required reports, or do not follow the new guidance, could see almost a third of their road maintenance funding withheld, which would have a significant impact.

The hope is that with a more proactive approach to road maintenance, the focus will eventually be on improving conditions rather than simply repairing the roads in the most urgent need of attention.

It’s a reminder that road safety is about so much more than just your fleet and your drivers, though it’s still vital that you adhere to your obligations, which is where Compliance Monitor and Fleet Monitor come in.
