Fleets are being urged to take extra precautions over the safety and security of vehicles and drivers, with theft on motorways rising.
So-called ‘cargo crime’, where the goods from HGVs and trucks is stolen, has been steadily rising, with 3,424 incidents in 2025.
The data comes from the National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service and found that more than half of all incidents occur when a fleet vehicle is parked at an independent location.
In fact, 20% of all incidents in 2025 occurred when a HGV or truck was parked at a motorway service station.
From a loss prevention and security perspective, ensuring that vehicle security checks are undertaken not just when setting off and arriving, but on any stop, could help the situation.
But police are also aware of the issue as they attempt a crackdown, with the most common technique for cargo crimes being slashing the curtain on HGVs, then gaining access to the goods within.
