Millions Of Drivers Risk Fines For Expired Or Incorrect Licences…
More than 2 million drivers in the UK could be risking £1,000 fines by driving with an incorrect or expired driving licence.
The research, which polled 2,000 drivers, found that 6% admit to driving with an expired licence, with more than one-third of drivers saying they didn’t renew their last licence until more than one month after it expired.
Details such as name changes after a marriage or a change of address were also ‘delayed’ by drivers, with one in five admitting they took longer than they should to update it.
With the maximum penalty for being caught with an expired licence or a licence with incorrect details being £1,000, it’s a concern for all drivers and fleets.
The average fine for an expired licence or one with incorrect details was £415 last year, while many drivers claimed they didn’t receive a renewal letter from the DVLA.
Research was conducted by confused.com and highlighted the issue with drivers renewing licences every 10 years.
But part of the issue is the long length of a licence, with 66% not releasing that their licence was out of date.
With 37% of drivers who let their licence expire being issued a fine and 16% actually receiving a ban from driving, it’s clear that it’s an issue that’s becoming a serious concern.
While digital driving licences are on the horizon later this year, the reality is that physical driving licences will be around for many years to come before they become optional.
In fact, 9% of UK motorists have said that their driving licence is up for renewal soon, with many still admitting they’re not planning to sort their renewal until the expiry date has already passed – highlighting the importance of routine licence checks for fleets.
