Road Safety: Cold Weather Risks Battery Failure For Half A Million Drivers

New data from roadside recovery firms has revealed that colder weather could see almost half a million vehicle batteries fail in the next 3 months.

With the first real cold snap hitting now as we head towards December and January, fleets and drivers are being warned over the potential risks associated with freezing temperatures.

While de-icing windscreens and warming engines can add time to vehicle checks and journeys, vehicle maintenance becomes even more important as temperatures drop.

Looking at comparative figures from last year, battery failures rose by 26% in November 2024 compared with the month before, which has set expectations of a similar rise this month.

The combination of darker skies, colder weather and busier roads as we head towards the run-up to Christmas brings road safety into sharp focus.

Wintry conditions can be treacherous and being prepared is crucial, with adverse weather such as snow and ice making roads slippery and reducing visibility.

There are some crucial steps you can take to ensure you stay safe in wintry weather, though, including:

  • Increasing your following distance to allow for extra stopping time on slippery roads
  • Using your headlights and turn signals to improve visibility and communicating your intentions to other drivers
  • Keeping an emergency kit in your car in case you get stranded (that means water, blankets, phone charger, flashlight, and food)
  • Taking regular breaks on long trips to reduce the risk of fatigue
