Drivers Urged To Prepare For ‘Heatwave’ And Bank Holiday Traffic

As we head into another Bank Holiday weekend, drivers are urged to prepare for the hottest start to May on record.
Staying cool and taking regular breaks is just as important as another other vehicle checks you undertake before hopping in the driver’s seat.
With more than 17 million leisure journeys expected over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, with the highest levels on Friday, the added bonus of the warm weather could see more people taking spontaneous trips.
That’s likely to lead to more traffic and congestion, which is why road safety campaigners are asking drivers to make sure they stay hydrated, check their air conditioning and vehicle health and take regular breaks if they’re planning on being on the road this weekend.
It’s not expected that roadworks will be removed like they were over the long Easter Bank Holiday a couple of weeks ago, though.
And following the trends of traffic being on the rise, experts are predicting there will be one million more journeys taken over this weekend than the same weekend in 2024.
With Friday not being a Bank Holiday, fleets are being urged to allow extra time for journeys as people finish early or take the day off to make the most of the good weather over the long weekend.
Experts have recommended that you ensure you always have essential items with you when driving in the summer, including a water bottle, snacks, suncream, phone charger, blanket, flashlight and a tyre inflator.
