Are Electric Vehicle Repair Costs Prohibitive For Fleets?
Electric vehicles (EVs) are now part of many everyday fleet operations, with improvements made in battery performance, range, and charging infrastructure meaning that it’s a seamless operation for some.
But there is one area that is an ongoing concern for fleets… electric vehicle repair costs.
New data has shown that EVs that are involved in so-called ‘non-fault’ collisions cost more 19% more to repair than petrol, diesel or hybrid vehicles.
That’s on top of taking almost 10% longer to repair than an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle.
In pure cost terms, the average cost of an EV repair in a non-fault collision was over £6,000, which was more than £1,000 more than an ICE vehicle.
While it shouldn’t be the sole factor in a fleet owner’s decision on whether to switching to EVs, it does impact the overall cost implication and that is always an important consideration.
Interestingly, recent data has been positive on the maintenance of EVs, with fewer issues in the short and medium term compared to ICE vehicles due to being mechanically simpler.
But collision repairs are proving to be a different issue entirely and highlight the importance of having visibility over your fleet, which is where Risk Monitor and Accident Monitor can play a crucial role.
