Imitation Is The Highest Form Of Flattery
When it comes to classic cars, some stand the test of time for all the right reasons.
For the VW Beetle, that was truer than most… because it became a classic car while it was still in production.
In fact, it has both the record for most vehicles sold in one single platform at 21.5 million units AND the longest production of any single generation of car at 65 years.
So, it’s only natural that others would want to replicate that success, right?
Well, in quite unusual circumstances, that’s what a manufacturer in China has done with the ‘Wecan Beetle’.
The entire vehicle is made from fibreglass and takes its ‘inspiration’ from the 1968 iteration of the VW Beetle, complete with its trademark upright headlights.
Part of the reason the Wecan Beetle is happening is because VW have never sold the Beetle in China, meaning that any VW Beetle spotted in the country had to have been imported.
Interestingly, it’s purpose is far from what you’d expect – it’s not aiming to be a vehicle used for commuting or as a main car for anyone.
With a top speed of 22mph and a maximum distance of 50 miles before requiring a full charge, it’s being pitched as ideal for tourist trips, advertising appearances, window displays and as a wedding car.
I wonder what other vehicles might be imitated in the future…
