Government figures suggest that almost a quarter of reported road collisions in the UK last year involved at least one person driving or riding for work.
However, the purpose of the journey was unknown for more than half of the vehicles involved, meaning that the ‘true’ proportion of collisions connected to work-related driving could be considerably higher.
It is also important to look beyond the vehicles traditionally associated with fleet compliance.
Cars accounted for almost 29% of work-related injury collisions during 2025, while vans represented a further 23%. Yet cars, vans and grey fleet vehicles don’t always receive the same level of oversight as larger commercial vehicles.
The issue is that the uncertainty can lead to a gap in fleets’ understanding of their road safety risk.
For example, are licence checks, risk assessments and training applied consistently across every type of vehicle? And would your team know how to respond and support a driver immediately following a serious incident?
Naturally, preventing collisions remains the priority, but having a clear process for when something goes wrong is essential too.
