When innovation and fate collide… with a tyre

When you’re driving on the motorway, there are a million and one things to keep an eye out for.

Drivers overtaking, hazards ahead, speed limit changes, your next exit…

And flying tyres.

Okay, so the last one seems a bit out there, but it can happen – as it did with a Kia Soul recently.

The Kia Soul was an innovative design launched by the South Korean manufacturer that sits somewhere between a hatchback and an SUV, in what is now known as the ‘crossover’ vehicle category.

But it’s hard to predict a tyre dismounting from another vehicle on the motorway before careering into the path of your vehicle.

Which is precisely what happened in this video…

The incident occurred when a Chevrolet pickup truck’s tyre flew off unexpectedly, causing a collision with the Kia that saw it launch several feet in the air…

Which is pretty terrifying.  

Don’t worry though, everyone involved walked away unharmed, which is a lucky escape given the velocity of the accident.

Keeping safe on the roads is vitally important, as well all know, but it’s never just a case of being down to the individual – there are a whole range of factors…

And it’s a pretty handy reminder that all vehicles need regular maintenance, no matter how safe they might look to the naked eye.

I think I’ll be double-checking my car after watching that one, anyway…
