Most Drivers Are Unaware That Council-Run MOT Test Centres Exist

When it comes to booking MOTs, the majority of drivers in the UK are completely unaware that council-run MOT test centres even exist.

That’s according to new research which found that most drivers automatically turn to their dealership or local garage rather than checking if their local authority runs their own MOT centres.

In fact, more than 100 local councils offer MOT testing to the general public…

Most Drivers Don’t Know About Local Council MOT Test Centres

A survey of drivers in the UK found that 75% of drivers don’t even realise that local council’s run MOT test centres, with only 11% having ever used one.

But one of the biggest benefits of using a council-run MOT test centre is impartiality because unlike most private garages (and dealerships) they typically don’t offer repairs, meaning that there’s nothing to be gained from any remedial work required either to pass the MOT or following the MOT.

All they offer is a straightforward pass or fail, with honest advisories.

Nearly half of those who have used a council-run centre said they found them more trustworthy than traditional garages, and over 40% appreciated the unbiased advice and focus on essential repairs only.

Convenience and efficiency were also highlighted as key benefits, with many centres offering easy booking and prompt service.

Are Council-Run MOT Tests Cheaper Or More Expensive?

The good news is that costs are generally competitive, with the average MOT cost at a local authority centre costing under £50, with some as low as £37. The government-mandated cap on the price of an MOT is currently £54.85, which is the maximum any garage or dealership can legally charge drivers.

Interestingly, though, most drivers remain loyal to dealerships and local garages, with some drivers even preferring the fact that they can have their MOT and any necessary repairs done in one place on the same visit.

But for many, it’s down to a lack of awareness that councils even run test centres at all.

If you’re looking at booking MOTs for you and your fleet, knowing all of your options is crucial to ensure you’re getting the best deal from the most reliable mechanics and MOT test centres in your area.

One thing to always look for is the official DVSA authorisation – check for the official blue sign with three white triangles, which indicates DVSA approval.

MOTs are a crucial part of road safety, but not the only factor, with recent news around a rise in incidents and the news that millions of vehicles remain on the road despite manufacturers issuing safety recalls in the last few years.

Vehicle and road safety is a key issue that the government is looking to address currently, with a focus on investment in smart motorways and AI technology to spot dangerous driving and driving offences such as distracted driving.
