Potholes, Progress And What It Means For Fleet Safety
Potholes have been an issue on UK roads for a long time and with the cold and wet weather over winter, there’s no doubt you’ve come across even more in recent weeks.
It’s a hot topic this week in particular, with National Pothole Day seeing our least favourite road condition make headline news again.
It sounds light-hearted, but for drivers and fleets it’s become a very real reminder of the road safety challenges we face every single day.
For fleets, the impact goes far beyond the frustration of a rough journey because potholes contribute to tyre damage, wheel and suspension issues, alignment problems and unexpected downtime.
The good news, though, is that councils and central government have committed funding to road repairs, with more of a focus on longevity rather than quick fixes and patchwork repairs.
Alongside that investment, new AI-driven technology is starting to play a meaningful role in how potholes are detected, prioritised and repaired…
While that progress is welcome, the reality today is that potholes are still very much part of daily driving, and the backlog of repairs means that it might be some time until we see meaningful change.
As road infrastructure evolves, fleet safety has to evolve with it and I know that’s an important topic for all fleets right now.
Technology has a role to play on both sides, improving the roads themselves and helping fleets protect drivers while those improvements take effect.
