Red crabs halt Christmas…

Red crabs have put a halt on Christmas…

Well, the roads on Christmas Island, anyway.

We all know that traffic on the roads is heavy at this time of year, with Christmas shoppers, extra freight transport, and those travelling to see family around the festive period.

You see, millions of red crabs crawled across Christmas Island, just off the coast of Australia, this week on their annual migration.

It’s caused widescale disruption on the roads, including traffic jams – and people have been getting out of their cars to move them off the roads.

It’s one of the stranger reasons for traffic jams I’ve ever come across, although I have seen a family of ducks stop traffic once…

Christmas Island’s National Park Resource Manager, Brendan Tiernan, said: "This year's migration has just been absolutely epic.

"The roads have been a seething mass of red crabs. It's caused traffic jams on this small island and people having to get out of their cars and rake them out the way."

It’s a pretty unique situation since the Christmas Island red crab is native to the island and protected by Australian law – just imagine if the M25 was shut down because of red crabs…

So, what’s the weirdest reason for a traffic jam you’ve ever seen?

Spilled milk truck? Broken down tank? Runaway sheep?
