For a long time, radio has been the perfect accompaniment while driving.

Whether you’re a fan of talk radio like BBC Radio Five Live or TalkSport, the latest chart hits on Capital or Heart, keeping it chilled with BBC Radio 4, listening to the radio is a habit that’s ingrained into all of us.

What’s your go-to listen when you’re on the road?

As the years have rolled by, a lot has changed in vehicles. Tape decks, gone. CD players, pretty much gone.

And now, AM radio is on the way out.

Yep, because DAB has gradually become the preferred method of radio listening in vehicles, there’s little room left for the classic AM wave band.

The main issue here is that electric vehicles could be the final nail in the coffin of AM radio, according to the New York Times.

It’s all down to some pretty techy issues – apparently, the electromagnetic inference that comes with EVs can interfere with the AM radio waves, which basically makes it unlistenable.

If you’ve ever heard the static when you drive under a bridge, you’ll know what I mean.

So, instead of EV manufacturers creating a situation where they’re making a function that will almost never work, they’ve decided to leave out AM radio from their vehicles.

And that might mean the end of the road for AM radio.

All the main manufacturers are following suit now, with Tesla, Volvo, VW, Porsche, BMW and Ford all saying ciao to AM.

Would you miss AM radio? Or is it time to switch to DAB as we move to electric?
