Safety And Journey Satisfaction On England’s Motorways Has Decreased

An annual review from the independent watchdog for transport has revealed the ‘best’ and ‘worst’ motorways in England.

The review explores key aspects such as roadworks, safety, improvements, road conditions and traffic levels.

More than 9,000 drivers were surveyed, with 69% saying that they are satisfied with their journeys on England’s motorway and A-road network, a slight drop from 2024’s figures (71%).

One of the major reasons given for that drop is the installation of more than 150 new emergency refuge areas on smart motorways, which has led to a significant number of roadworks on motorways.

That has resulted in significant delays on major motorways, which for drivers and fleets alike can cause all manner of issues.

All-Lane Running Smart Motorways have been controversial since their introduction, hence the safety strategy employed by National Highways to import save both road safety and public perception of the roads.

With those improvements now complete, there’s hope that it will have a positive impact on road safety and driver satisfaction (as well as journey times).

Roadworks are a contentious issue for drivers and fleets, with a cross-party committee exploring whether tighter controls need to be employed around where and when roadworks can begin – you can read more about that here.

Do you think more needs to be done by National Highways and Government to not only improve road safety, but improve driver experience (and reduce congestion) on major roads? Let us know…
