The Most Dangerous Road Types In The UK Revealed
Most drivers have a mental list of the road layouts they dislike the most and right now that most likely means avoiding potholes.
With the pothole issue worsening, it’s interesting to note that new research has revealed the most dangerous road types in the UK.
Unmarked crossroads often top the list, followed closely by yellow box junctions, staggered junctions and mini roundabouts, largely because can feel unpredictable, especially in heavy traffic or unfamiliar areas.
But new research suggests that the junctions’ drivers dislike the most aren’t necessarily the ones where the biggest risks lie.

According to Department for Transport (DfT) data, ‘T’ junctions and staggered junctions account for the highest number of casualties on UK roads, with more than 34,000 people killed or injured at these junction types in 2024 alone.
By comparison, crossroads and roundabouts recorded significantly fewer incidents, making those junctions much more dangerous.
One of the biggest contributors to danger is turning across oncoming traffic, with data showing far more casualties occur when drivers turn right across traffic than when turning left.
That makes sense when you consider how important judgement, visibility and patience are at busy junctions.
At the same time, drivers are facing an evolving road environment with camera enforcement increasing, yellow box junction fines remaining common in urban areas, and the rise of 20mph limits in cities such as London and across Wales changing how drivers approach junctions and residential roads.
It’s a vital reminder for everyone that understanding where risks really lie is a key step in improving driver safety and reducing incidents across your fleet.
