The mystery of the buried car…

At this time of year, mysteries are all the rage.
And this one is fit for Scooby Doo & the Mystery Gang, Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple, or whoever your favourite detectives are…
Because landscapers at a California mansion discovered something deep underground – a stolen Mercedes-Benz.
The car had been buried and loaded with bags of concrete, and the plot thickened when it transpired that the person who built the house, Johnny Lew, had a chequered past and had served time for murder, attempted murder, and insurance fraud.
The white Mercedes convertible was found after excavation work, and it was inspected by a police crime lab in California.

Police now believe that the car was buried not long after being reported stolen by Lew in September 1992, more than 30 years ago, and they don’t believe there’s any other foul play associated with the vehicle.
The property was sold by the Lew family in 2014, with new owners conducting renovation work on the mansion in recent years.
It’s a pretty unusual discovery to make and perhaps one of the stranger places for a car to turn up…
But it wouldn’t be the first time that a vehicle was disposed of for insurance purposes, although it’s not as common for it to turn up just a few feet from where it was supposedly stolen from.
